County Westmeath
At the outer edges of the commuter belt, Westmeath was always likely to
get hit hard by price falls. But in the final part of 2008, asking prices
crumbled by 9.9 per cent, bringing the average 2008 house price down to
€232,000.
Estate agents report prices of new properties falling from €220,000 to
under €200,000.
Westmeath Facts: The county capital is Mullingar. Other towns include the thriving business centre of Athlone, Moate and Ballymore. The population of County Westmeath is just over 63,000. Historically, Westmeath has a strong agricultural base rising from particularly fertile land in the county. Agriculture today is still one of the principal employers with a variety of mixed drystock, tillage and related agri-businesses and meat production. Manufacturing in County Westmeath is as diverse as its terrain. The broad spread of activity includes plastics, engineering, publishing, milling, wood products and joinery, IT and the services sector for the growing urban areas. Westmeath has strong industrial bases both in Athlone and Mullingar with the Swedish software giant, Ericsson and Utah Medical Products.
